Cycling from Portugal to Jordan
WELCOME!

Biking, you say? (I know, for Heba, it seems a foreign concept). It all began a few months ago when the government of Sudan kicked us out of its country. Looking for alternatives, Richard casually asked: "What do you think of going on a bike trip?" Well, ladies and gentlemen, what was first a dreamy idea has finally become a reality. And this website is your way to follow us through our trials and tribulations (before we had even left on this trip, Heba had already fallen off her bike four times) as we bike for three months from Portugal to Jordan. This trip emerged mostly as a result of our frustrations after expulsions from Sudan;  so here we are, shifiting gears - both literally and figuratively - and hoping to sweat Sudan out of our systems.

We'd like to give a big THANK YOU to Nathaniel and Scott McCrary of TTR Bikes, in Greenville, South Carolina,  who invested lots of energy getting our new bikes together and showed impressive patience (if any of you know Richard, you know he can be very demanding!) in preparing us for this trip. Thank you gentlemen - we wouldn't be here without you!

Please forgive misgivings on this site. It's a work in progress...

About Us:

Richard is a 34-year-old American aid worker who has lived in Africa for more than five years. He specializes in post-conflict recovery and has worked with NGOs in Sierra Leone, Liberia and Sudan, among others. He has done three 10-day bike trips in Europe and the USA. And generally, he is always right.

Heba is a 26-year-old Canadian journalist who has worked in Senegal, Chad and Sudan. She has never done long-distance biking before. She thinks she is alwyas right. But Richard usually proves her wrong.

Richard and Heba met in Sudan when Heba interviewed him for an article she was working on. The interview never led her to an article, but instead, to trip across Europe and the Middle East!
